A larger-than-planned vehicle purchase strengthens Swedish industrial ties

Norway’s defence investment announced last week represents a significant contract for Swedish industry.

According to Dagens Industri, the country plans to invest approximately NOK 19.7 billion in combat vehicles from BAE Systems Hägglunds.

The package includes 80 new CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, 24 mortar carrier variants and upgrades to 32 existing platforms.

The procurement forms part of Norway’s long-term defence plan, which allocates NOK 115 billion through 2040, including NOK 31 billion before 2030.

The scale of the vehicle order exceeds earlier plans, which Dagens Industri attributes in part to the need to replace materiel donated to Ukraine.

The CV90 is one of Europe’s most widely deployed combat vehicle platforms and is operated by multiple countries including Denmark and Finland in the Nordics.

Norway already fields the system, and the latest investment reinforces an established force structure - typically advantageous from both operational and industrial perspectives, particularly for maintenance, upgrades and supply chains.
